Olga Stanganelli
April 11, 1933 to June 2, 2017
Born in Beverly on a day her mother would recount still had snow on the ground, Olga (Petrosino) Stanganelli passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of a star-filled spring night at the home of her youngest son Steven Stanganelli in Amesbury.
Olga was the seventh of eight children and second of three daughters of Italian immigrant parents Dominic Petrosino, a barber, and Mary (Modugno) Petrosino, a homemaker.
She lived through the Great Depression and welcomed home her four brothers who had gone off to serve during WWII. She attended Beverly schools including McKay Elementary where she was the proud and talented captain of the volleyball team and Brisco Junior High School. She worked her entire life in electronics manufacturing including CBS Hytron in Danvers and Western Electric in North Andover. She retired after a long career at Raytheon where she had risen through the ranks to become a quality assurance inspector.
Shortly after an introduction by a co-worker, she married Alfio (Fred) of Lawrence. They relocated to New York where Fred worked for Eastern and Pan Am Airlines but despite this she refused to step onto a plane until much later in life. Eventually, they moved back to Lawrence where they lived for many years before moving to Methuen. In retirement, they relocated to York Beach, Maine to be closer to her eldest son’s family. In Maine, she enjoyed walking the beaches and being a Red Hat Lady. In 2004, she made Birchwood Pointe Condominiums in Amesbury her new home.
Olga was a woman of simple tastes and interests. Her favorite pastime was reading although she also tried her hand at painting, crocheting and macramé . She was not easily impressed by material possessions. Olga was a devoted mother, caring wife and fierce defender of her family.
She was known for a quick smile, an energetic personality, and her single-minded focus on keeping a clean home.
In early April, she had been admitted to MGH/Boston and diagnosed with a brain tumor similar to one she had survived years before. She was released to at-home hospice where she could be close to family and friends.
She is survived by her youngest sister Mary Cuoco and her husband John of Beverly.
Her legacy lives on through her eldest son Joseph of Boston, and her grandsons Joseph Stanganelli, Jr. of Newton, Massachusetts and Stephen A. Stanganelli of Naples, Florida as well as her youngest son Steven Stanganelli, Amesbury City Councilor and certified financial planner, and his wife Kristin (McCowan) and their children Spencer, Zachary and Sabrina.
She joins her husband Alfred (Alfio) of fifty-five years who passed away nearly six years ago.
She is predeceased by her brothers Peter of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Salvatore, Dominic, Luigi and Stephen of Beverly, and sister Elmira (Mira) Richardson of Middleton.
She leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cherished friends including Joan Stanley of Exeter, Linda Soffron and Maggie Riley of Portsmouth who helped her so much over these past eighteen months.
